NSFAS Registration Received Meaning 2027: What Happens Next

If your NSFAS status says Registration Received, you’re close. It means your university or TVET college has told NSFAS that you are registered for this academic year. NSFAS needs this before it can confirm your funding and release payments.

It is good news, but it isn’t the last step. Below is what the status means, what happens next, how long it usually lasts, and what to do if it doesn’t move.

What “Registration Received” means

Every institution sends NSFAS a list of the students who have registered and the courses they’re registered for. When your name and details are on that list and match your NSFAS application, your status changes to Registration Received.

In plain terms:

NSFAS already accepted that you qualify financially.
Your institution has confirmed that you are a registered student.
NSFAS can now finalise your funding for the year.

It does not yet mean money has been paid. Tuition goes to your institution, and allowances only start once the remaining steps are done.

What happens after Registration Received

NSFAS confirms your funding. It checks that your registered course and institution match what it funds.
You sign your bursary agreement. A notice appears on myNSFAS. Sign it as soon as it appears; NSFAS can’t pay allowances until you do.
Your allowance account is set up. Depending on your institution, you’ll receive your allowances through an NSFAS payment provider or directly from your institution. Follow the activation SMS or email carefully.
Payments start. Tuition and accommodation go to your institution or residence. Living, learning-material and transport allowances are paid to you on the NSFAS payment dates.

How long does Registration Received last?

For most students it lasts from a few days to around three weeks. It can take longer at the start of the year, when institutions are sending registration data for thousands of students at once, or if your registration details need to be corrected.

Stuck on Registration Received? Common reasons

Your bursary agreement is waiting. Log in to myNSFAS and look for an agreement to sign. Many students miss the SMS.

Your registration details don’t match. A different student number, ID number, course code or a misspelled name can stop the process. Ask your financial aid office to check what was sent to NSFAS.

Your registration isn’t final. If your registration is still provisional, for example because of outstanding fees or documents, your institution may update it later. NSFAS waits for the final record.

Your course or institution isn’t funded. NSFAS only funds approved qualifications at public universities and TVET colleges. Check our list of courses funded by NSFAS.

Academic progress or funding limits. Returning students who didn’t meet academic progress requirements, or who have reached the N+1 or N+2 limit, may be stopped at this point.

What to do if it doesn’t move

Check myNSFAS for messages, an agreement to sign or a request for documents.
Visit or email your institution’s financial aid office. They can see what registration data was sent to NSFAS and fix mistakes on their side. This solves most problems.
Contact NSFAS with your ID number and reference number if the financial aid office confirms your registration was sent correctly. Use the official channels on our NSFAS contact details page.
Keep records of who you spoke to and when. It helps if you need to escalate or appeal.

Never pay anyone who offers to “speed up” your status. NSFAS doesn’t charge for any part of the process.

Registration Received for returning students

If you’re a returning student, you usually don’t apply again; NSFAS checks your academic results and your new registration each year. Registration Received means your institution has confirmed this year’s registration. NSFAS then checks your academic progress before funding continues. If you didn’t pass enough modules, your funding may stop here even though you’re registered.

Registration Received at TVET colleges

TVET students go through the same steps. Your college confirms your registration for each trimester or semester, so you may see Registration Received more than once in a year.
