How Long Does NSFAS Take to Respond? 2027 Timelines

Independent guide. nsfasstatus.co.za is not the official NSFAS website. The waiting times below are typical ranges, not promises from NSFAS.

The short answer: NSFAS usually starts sending application outcomes about four weeks after applications close, and most first-time applicants hear back between December and February. Appeals usually take one to two months. Emails can take weeks during the January rush.

The long answer depends on what you’re waiting for. Below is each kind of wait, what’s normal, and the point at which you should stop waiting and act.

NSFAS waiting times at a glance

What you’re waiting for Typical wait Act if…
First outcome after applications close About 4 weeks after the closing date Nothing has changed by mid-January
Each status stage A few days to several weeks One stage hasn’t moved for 6 weeks
Provisionally funded → approved Until your results are out and you’re registered You’ve registered and nothing changes for 3 to 4 weeks
Appeal decision Usually 30 to 60 days 60 days pass with no update
Email reply No fixed timeframe; often weeks in peak season No reply after 2 weeks; use the portal instead
Call centre Long queues in January and February Call early in the morning, outside peak months
First allowance after approval After you sign your agreement and your institution confirms registration You’ve done both and a month passes with no payment

For the 2026 cycle, NSFAS said it would start responding about four weeks after applications closed (Briefly, December 2025). The other ranges come from what students typically experience.

How long NSFAS takes to process a new application

Your application doesn’t move in one step. It passes through several checks, and each can take a different amount of time.

  1. Application submitted. NSFAS has received it. This shows almost immediately.
  2. Filtering. NSFAS checks that the form is complete and the documents are there.
  3. Validation. Your ID and details are checked with Home Affairs and other agencies.
  4. Evaluation. Your household income is checked, including with SARS and SASSA. This is often the longest stage.
  5. Funding eligibility. You qualify financially. First-year students are often provisionally funded at this point.
  6. Awaiting academic results / registration. NSFAS waits for your results and for your institution to confirm you’ve registered.
  7. Approved, then signing your bursary agreement. Once you sign, payments can start.

If you applied early, you may sit on “Evaluation” for weeks before anything else happens. That’s normal. What matters is whether NSFAS has asked you for anything. Our guide to NSFAS stages and their meanings explains each stage in more detail.

Why matric students wait longer

If you’re in matric, NSFAS can’t make a final decision until your results come out in January. Your status may show provisionally funded or awaiting academic results for weeks. You’ll also need to be accepted and registered at a public university or TVET college before you’re approved.

Returning students usually hear back faster, because NSFAS only has to check academic progress and registration.

How long NSFAS takes to respond to appeals

If your application was unsuccessful, you can appeal on myNSFAS within the appeal window shown on the portal. Most students hear back within 30 to 60 days, but it can take longer if you’re asked for more documents.

You can track your appeal under the appeal section of myNSFAS. The status will move from submitted to evaluation and then to an outcome. If it’s been more than 60 days with no change, contact NSFAS with your reference number. Read our full NSFAS appeal guide.

How long NSFAS takes to respond to emails

NSFAS doesn’t publish an email response time. In practice, replies can take a week or two in quiet months and much longer in January and February.

To get a faster answer:

  • Use the query or support option inside myNSFAS rather than emailing.
  • Put your ID number and reference number in the subject line if you do email.
  • Send one email per issue, and don’t resend the same email every day; it adds to the queue.
  • Use the official channels on our NSFAS contact details page.

Never send your password or a one-time PIN by email. NSFAS will never ask for it.

How long after approval NSFAS pays

Approval doesn’t mean money arrives the same week. Allowances start only after:

  1. You’ve signed your bursary agreement on myNSFAS.
  2. Your institution has confirmed your registration.
  3. Your allowance account has been set up with the payment provider.

Most first payments go out from February or March. If you’ve done all three and a month passes without a payment, ask your institution’s financial aid office first; most delays are on the registration side. Check the NSFAS payment dates for the monthly schedule and see the NSFAS allowances for amounts.

Why NSFAS might be taking longer for you

  • Missing documents. Your application stops until you upload them. Check myNSFAS for a message.
  • Information that doesn’t match. A different name spelling, ID number or household detail can send you back to validation.
  • Consent form problems. An unsigned or unclear consent form stalls evaluation. Download the NSFAS consent form.
  • Registration not confirmed. Your institution hasn’t sent your registration details to NSFAS yet.
  • Peak season. Millions of students check status in January and February.

How to speed things up

  1. Upload clear, certified documents the first time.
  2. Keep the cellphone number and email on myNSFAS correct, because NSFAS sends updates there.
  3. Register at your institution as soon as registration opens.
  4. Sign your bursary agreement the day it appears.
  5. Check your status once a week, not several times a day. Here’s how to check your NSFAS status.

Watch out for “fast-track” scams

When people are anxious, scammers show up. NSFAS does not charge to speed up your application, and nobody on WhatsApp or Facebook can approve your funding for a fee. If someone asks for money, your password or an OTP to “push your application through”, it’s a scam.
